*ABOUT MURRAY

Who Murray is and what he does

Murray McLauchlan

SINGER SONGWRITER
Forty odd years after his first foray into music, Murray has twenty albums to his credit on both True North Records and Capitol Records. His songs have been covered by many other artists as well as being featured in high school text books. He has played, both solo, and with bands in every major hall in Canada, from Massey Hall in Toronto, to the Orpheum in Vancouver and all the Jubilees in between as well as extensively in the U.S.

Murray’s new 2021 release “Hourglass” on True North Records is the result of a hard period of introspection during the pandemic where he reflected on racism, economic inequality, the future of the planet and the plight of refugees among other topics. That said, it never hits you over the head. The songs treat the listener gently even though the lyrics might cut hard. It is a labour of love with the able assistance of musicians Victor Bateman (bass), Al Cross (drums and percussion), Burke Carroll (steel) and Vezi Tayyeb on keys. As Murray says “While the world gets noisier, I just keep getting quieter.”

He is happily married to Denise Donlon and they have a son so Murray continues with what he thinks is his most important job: being a dad.

Hourglass

Hourglass is a collection of songs that address the shocking events of the recent past and the ongoing trajectory of a troubled world but also the sweetness of life itself. McLauchlan began with a deeply personal series of poems and then married them to rootsy guitar licks and riffs, to build one of his most political and personal albums. Soaring pedal steel, delicate piano melodies and deft guitar playing bring the lyrics to life, in a project that ultimately celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.

“The Juno Award winner’s 20th studio album is perhaps his finest. The album feels much like a simple request of what we need to do better as a society all set to swooning pedal steels and arpeggiated acoustic guitars.” Maverick magazine – U.K

“With its soothing melodies, gently burnished arrangements and gentle, assured vocals, the messaging is conveyed with the reflective wisdom of a respected elder, one who emphasizes a certain strength rather than scolding its subjects into submission.” American Songwriter Magazine — U.S.A.

“Murray McLauchlan, Hourglass – my favourite album of the year. Make sure you get a copy, it will do your soul good.” Cashbox Magazine—Canada
